How Priority Lighting Is Reducing Light Pollution

Air and water pollution are unfortunately common terms in today’s world. Less well known, however, is light pollution in our cities and towns. Light pollution is defined by Darksky.org as “The inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light – known as light pollution – can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate.” Light pollution hinders our ability to see the night sky but just as detrimental is that its incorrect usage wastes tremendous resources and energy. What is being done to reduce light pollution? Most cities in the US are adopting and enforcing outdoor lighting laws. These include restrictions in the amount of output (lumens) installed lighting is allowed, along with footcandle and color temperature maximums. To determine compliance in new construction projects, a lighting certification must be completed and approved by a professional in many cases. Existing structures must be retrofitted and many of these requirements apply to single family homes as well. Priority Lighting is here to help.
